We priced a signature cocktail at 95 of Bangkok's 105 rooftop bars — from riverside terraces to sky-scraping decks — to answer one question: what does altitude actually cost you?

Average cocktail price by the floor the bar sits on. Bangkok charges for altitude with remarkable consistency — roughly ฿8 per floor, every floor.

Money can't buy you stars
Here's the finding nobody expects: what you pay has almost no bearing on how much people like the place. Across all 95 priced venues, the correlation between cocktail price and review rating is 0.15 — statistically next to nothing. Your baht buys altitude, a view, and a dress code. It does not buy a better-reviewed evening.

The flip-flop line
One thing your money does buy: a dress code. Every single venue charging ฿700+ for a cocktail (7 of 7) asks for smart casual or stricter. Under ฿350, only 5 of 23 do — everywhere else, sandals ride the elevator just fine. In Bangkok, the dress code kicks in somewhere around the ฿500 cocktail.

Methodology
Prices are taken from the published menus of 95 rooftop bars in Bangkok (105 venues tracked in total; those without a listed cocktail price are excluded rather than estimated). Where a menu lists a range, we use the midpoint. Floor numbers are the venue's lowest rooftop level. Neighborhood averages are only shown for areas with four or more priced venues. The per-floor premium is a least-squares fit of price against floor number across all priced venues.
Ratings are publicly listed review scores (out of 5) with their review counts. The "best value" list only admits venues rated 4.5 or higher by at least 100 reviewers. The price/rating comparison uses Pearson correlation across all priced venues, and the price bands compared are under ฿350 and ฿700+. A venue "asks for smart casual" when its published dress code mentions smart casual, a formal code, or stricter. The stacked-tower figure assumes 3.2 m per storey.
